what I saw in my last trip.
I'm 27yrs of age. A true KoreanAmerican 1.5 GenXer who can speak both languages fluently. I grew up partially in Seoul, NYC, DC, and Dallas, yet NEVER ventured to LA until recently. I had to grow up hearing of how great LA is...the food, the weather, the clubs, and of course the women.
So finally I decided to take a couple of days off work and go see what I've been missing over the years. Well, after my trip, I can say that I haven't missed much. And upon reading further posts regarding Ktown and its nightlife, it seems that most Ktowners would agree it's gone downhill.
My first night out was at Le Prive. This place has GOT to be a joke. I was told that it was THE largest club in LA. Celebs hang out there. And the women there are gorgeous. Uh...no. Not even close. Young-gaes all around me. These girls (not women) must have been barely 18. And they dressed like hoochie skanks. Oh we have hoochie skanks here in TX, but they're all Vietnamese. And our waiter kept bringing these young chicks who were half my size. I told him I was into tall girls. Aw fkit...I was so disappointed. THESE WATERS ARE BAAAAAAAAAAAAD.
Next night, someone recommended Velvet Room (VR). It was better than Prive. Hell...I don't think it could've been worse...well maybe. Anyway, turns out that our waiter gave our table away. Too bad cuz he could've made some money that night had he made some effort to treat us right. He seemed really apologetic about the whole mix up. And let us in just to "taste" the waters. There were at least 2 girls I found attractive at VR, whereas I probably would've burned in Hell for thinking such thoughts at Prive.
Running out of time, so I called a friend of mine (whose lame ass decided to stay home) to hook us up at KarNak. He hooked us up with a waitress. My overall impression of KarNak wasn't too bad. A few hot chicks. But most were too fu*ked up to even talk to you. At least the age group was a better than Prive and VR. But the club atmosphere sucked...dance floor was small, dj sucked, music sucked. It was kinda "weak."
Now I hear everyone is hanging out in W Hollywood or Bev Hills. Is this true? So Ktown is pretty much dead? Besides the restaurants and NRBs, Ktown really isn't the party place it once was, correct? And also, wtf is up with the clubs closing at 1:30a?! I've never heard of that sh*t before.
Someone please tell me there is much more to LA than what I saw. I plan on going back to visit a dong-seng of mine in August. I don't think I'll be going back to Ktown however. If my experience(s) seems unreal, then please tell me I went on an off weekend or something.
Are VS parties the hotspot? |

Your friend's right about one thing, club life in Ktown has become "weak" and everyone has ventured out to Hollywood. I'm about your age, and you missed it man...you missed the hey days of ktown clubbing...it was poppin when I was about 21 to 24....
So what happened you ask? People are probably sick and tired of doing the same sh*t over and over, but mostly I think they're truly annoyed by all the bad vibes, all the fights, ALL the time...
There's gotta be more to ktown than this you say? Sure there is...you forgot to mention room bangs. _________________ My DVD List

^ Nah. in my humble opinion The reason Ktown is dyin is because after 9-11 , no more Korean immigrants or at least less of them are comin because of tighter immigration laws, and peeps growin up from the hey days are workin wit white peeps in companies, and they realize that Ktown life is too different from White Life, so they basically sell out somewhat.
I dont really like sugar coating things. i like tellin it like it is. _________________ Saving Jessica Simpson from Oppression - The KOREAN MAN'S BURDEN |

well it all seems to be speculation, but everyone has a valid point to one degree or another. Tougher immigration laws can be a stretch, but there does seem to be a lack of new faces around in general. Most of the new faces appear to be young faces which have grown up. I have more dongsengs than I do friends now...
I guess I did miss out when Ktown was jumpin. I would hear of these other clubs such as Luxy(?) and Velferre(?), and how awesome these clubs were. It might be just my age, because when these clubs were hot, my friends and I were in our early twenties where as now LP and VR serve that age group. I guess I'm an old man...life is over. Time to start hanging out at church and start lookin for marriage material and kiss the ol' one night stands goodbye... *sniff sniff* |

| I had a lot of friends visit me in LA over the years and I think their expectations are just simply too high. LA probably has the most happening Ktown in the US but it ain't Korea. |

Le Prive being the largest club in L.A. is a lie. It's a big one, but there's about a half dozen in that size range, with at least Circus and LA Entertainment Center (a.k.a. Soho) beating it in capacity.
I think it's true: A lot of the young people who brought K-town to life have migrated over to the Hollywood hot-spots. Note the Visionshock and phNightlife events, for example.
It's too bad, in a way. A lot of young artsy white folks are moving into K-town, and the area's nightlife is ripe to explode in a multicultural way. But few have had the balls to get the ball rolling. |

I actually tried to be realistic in my expectations. But I was somewhat shocked by how people dressed. I couldn't think of anywhere trendier than LA other than perhaps NYC, but the hip-hop culture seems to have influenced so many of the kids in LA, that's where it all seems to be going. Sweats?! C'mon now. Kids at the Ktown clubs seem to be dressing like extras in a Lil Jon video (thugs/skanks)...ugh.
Can anyone suggest a good multicultural club in Hollywood or is it different from week to week? I've been checking out the visionshock site and they seem to rotate venues weekly. Also, do you have to rsvp at these events? |

| Dood.. I am thinking of getting a loan and purchase an empty building from the city, the one they use for filming locations. I figure the city is going to tear them down anyways, why not buy into one and throw parties the way I like it, plus I get to live on the top floor.... Too bad my pad in Irvine can't accomodate more than 200 people before the neighbors call the police.. |
