What kind of wine on Thanksgiving?

I'm hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for my friends, but I'm not much of a drinker so I don't know what kind of wine I should get. What's good with turkey meat? Nothing fancy, something I can pick up at the local grocery store. Any suggestions?

i think the general rule of thumb is, red meat goes with red wine, and white meat goes with white wine. turkey would be white meat, so white wine...

i don't know, not much of a wine person...

If you like a "peppery" red go with a Merlot, otherwise stick with a cabernet. As far as "white go with the 2001 Chardonnays.

My favorites:

Ravenswood Cabernet Sauvignon, 2000

La Crema Chardonnay 2000, or if you want to splurge go get a 2000 Stag's Leap Chardonnay (yummy). I like to chill my whites.

For one of the best selections go to a World Market.

I would suggest a nice wine decanter to aerate the wine. The bigger the surface area of the dispenser the better. And wait at least an hour before the consumption begins after you put it in the decanter. It usually dissipates the bitterness/acidity levels.

Look around/google. C&B (crate and barrell) has a bunch or if you want to splurge go to Sur La Table..good stuff.

although the general rule is how money stated, turkey (esp. for thanksgiving dinner) can go either way.
i personally am not a white wine drinker so i couldn't help you on that side. mebbe because i don't eat that much fish and never really do wine with fried chicken....

if you do decide to go with a red, IMO i would stay with a lighter red like a merlot or a pinot noir.

you can go with pinks or other varietals, but stay away from the sweet wines unless you are drinking it before or after the meal.
