shrimp heads

i never really thought about this much until i was crunching down on a deep fried prawn head earlier today. back in the states, i don't think i had ever encountered shrimp in restaurants that weren't peeled, de-veined, and had their heads lopped off. i probably ran into the occasional head, but nothing to write home about.

i have noticed though that in other parts of the world shrimp are not only served with the heads and tails still attached, but we are also expected to eat them. and the shell...i don't think i ever would have considered a shrimp shell an edible thing when i was a child. but lo and behold, again, after doing some traveling, i have come to the conclusion that while i do prefer my prawns with the shells off, eh...if they come with the shell on and everyone else i am dining with is eating them, then they're going down the hatch and into my belly.

so...how do you feel about shrimp heads? ever had them? would you try them? think they're repulsive? if your shrimp come with the heads on do you always remove them?

mmm....shrimp. i want some ~

shrimp heads just look nasty.. the head of any animal looks too nasty to eat...
and the shell? i prefer not to try and chew into a crustaceans shell. even its a bit*h to peel off...

hrm...the only part of the shrimp that i eat that isn't the pure flesh, is the tail cause it's so crunchy XD, but the head and shell, i never have seen anyone eat that, even though they were served as is. i always thought it was somewhat wierd, because they serve it witht he head/shell on and marinate it like hardcore with flavor but then everyone peels it off...kinda destroying the purpose of pre-marination. so people in korea actually eat hte head/shell? interesting

Did you guys ever try those Mexican snack packs? It has 4 giant dehydrated shrimps with Habanero sauce, hmmmmmmmm.

I don't really mind eating shrimp with the shell and head on. It's just going down is sorta uncomfortable.

no shrimp heads, shell, and tail for me.

i was at killer shrimp a few years ago. for those who haven't been there, they give you a big bowl of broth with shrimp in it. i think the heads are cut off but they still have the tails and the shell. i had a big pile of shell and tail at the end but i looked to my chinese friend and he had nothing. i was like wtf? basically had a good laugh when he told me he ate it all.
