Korean Americans in Korea

Im thinking about doing a quarter in Korea next year, and I was thinking about the food there. I love my korean hertige and all, and I love korean food. But man, sometimes I just need to get my grits and gravy going or a decent full on American style meal.

Do they have decent American food in korea that isnt koreanized? What do you guys do there for your biscuits and gravy?

theres a few places here... like umm...

greek restaurant in edae. you can get gyros there... but they put pickles in 'em. pretty cheap.. i think about 5,000 for a gyro. you can get full for probably 10,000. i spent like 15,000 though since i eat a lot.

mexican food... there's casa maya in apkujeong. i paid about 40,000 to get satisfied (not completely full) and for 2 coronas. maybe the average person will spend 20,000-25,000. the food is really good. they do make their own tortillas, and their salsa verde is the shiznit. however, no guacamole.

burgers... the best burger here, and it surprised me, is at TGI fridays. theres sh*t loads of TGI fridays. the friday's burger is really huge.. a half-pounder i'd estimate. warm fresh buns, lettuce, tomato, onions, meat cooked the way you want it. its cheap too.. like under 12,000 and it comes with fries. it definately fills me up.

steaks... i havent been to the outback steak house out here yet. however, i've been to the nashville steak house in itaewon. the food was not all that great. it was average at best (the steak anyway). however, its 'comfort food'. its in itaewon, they play american movies on the big screen there, the staff speaks english, all the customers speak english. the owner is a former US military figure of some sort. ive seen him b4.. old white dude. anyway, they also have bomb chili cheese fries. they have burgers too but i havent tried it. i spent 80,000 for dinner for two there. i had lots of beers btw... and lots of food.. so for food only (per person), perhaps 25,000? itaewon subway stop... forgot which exit # but its across the street from hamilton hotel.

there's also a pasta place near my crib called jessica's or something. i ordered some pasta, I forgot what it was, but it was fettuccine noodles and some alfredo-like sauce. it was actually ver good and i enjoyed it. i think it was like 10,000. this place is near sinchon. ummm near yonsei univ's east gate.

sandwiches... luckily i've found a really good sandwich place. and HOAGIES. its a place called tantalus... thers a few of them, but the one i go to is in sinchon across from the pizza hut. this place imports all their stuff from DIETZ & WATSON, which is a meat company in pennsylvania. they have REAL BRATWURST there. sh*t they even have turkey breast slices. you can get a turkey hoagie for 4,000 there. they look small, and they are smaller than the american ones, but they do pack it tightly in there. its satisfying. they also have regular sandiches for 3,000 which are really good as well. you can get AMERICAN HOT DOGS for 1,000 and they have real GERMAN BRATWURST for 2,500 and i think they have KNOCKWURST as well.

PIZZA HUT - horrible. i mean, its okay... but its just so not worth it.

MCDONALDS - if you want familiarity, fine... but mcdonalds food aint that great.

BURGER KING - a lil better than mcdonalds, and you can get stuffed for relatively cheap... but still, the food is not that great. i still like to get whoppers on occasion though.

there's plenty of SIZZLER, TGI FRIDAY type places here... you got...

TGI FRIDAY - already mentioned above. everythig i've had from here was very good, considering they have no "specialty" and their menu selections are diverse.

BENNIGAN's - never saw one in cali, but its sorta similar to TGI. they have good food here as well. i've gotten good sandwiches, and i hear the quesadillas are pretty good.

but... even with all those listed above... i still prefer korean food.

1) its cheaper
2) more selections
3) just tastes better
4) more widely available

i can go to this place in shinchon, where i eat dinner 2-3 times/week. they serve 삼겹살 @ 4,000 for 1인분. then you can get a bottle of hite for 3,000. it comes w/ free denjang jjigae. thats the part i really love. i also get a rice for 1,000. So i'll typically get 2 orders of 삼겹살, 맥주1병, 공기밥 1.... total is 12,000원. roughly $10.

or you can get 만두 .. like 12 pieces for 2,000원. a cheap meal.. of if yer hungry, get 2 orders... or even 3... its cheap. you can also get the ddukbokki for the same price.

korean restaurants... i get kimchi chigae for 4,000. and its really damn good. donkatsu for 4,000 as well. everything is just so cheap here if you just eat the local stuff. it just tastes so much better also.

^ you guys are just perpetuating the poor lost, confused, and clueless korean-american in korea stereotype that we have so much fun taking digs at.

the places statis mentioned are all typical places where you will find the rest of the clueless masses. food is mediocre at best. go knock yourself out with korean food. if you really need something non-korean your stomach will lead the way. keep your eyes peeled and your ears tuned in, there are heaps of other places for good non-korean food.
