K-Sly

Ktown213: K-Sly, we're so excited to have you! Give the readers of K-Town a quick intro about yourself!
K-Sly: Let's see, I was born in Seoul, Korea of a Korean mom and a white dad, oooh half breed! Ha ha! I moved to K-Town when I was 6 months old. I went to Hobart Elementary School, then moved to Virginia, back to Seoul, graduated at Kansas State University in sociology, moved to Atlanta, Las Vegas, then back to where I began...LA. My mom always called me yuh-ooh, fox in Korean so I just translated it and used my first initial K for Kathleen and Sly for cleverness.

Ktown213: Ah, so that's how your name came about. I'm sure you get asked this question millions of times, but how did it all start for you? Tell us about your first DJ experience!
K-Sly: In high school, I was obsessed with music, maybe too much. I went to college and volunteered at their station for four years, and I deejayed events in the process. My first real party gig was a disaster. I got booed, the records were skipping, and the equipment was bootleg.

Ktown213: Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that. But look how successful you are now! I'm sure you've had many opportunities to meet many musicians and celebrities all over the place. Tell us about some of the interesting people you've met.
K-Sly: Wow! I've met a lot, even one of my favorite rappers and now friend, E40. Everybody has a little E40 in them! Isaac Hayes who had a lot of wisdom, Big Pun before he passed who shared his charisma with everyone he met. 50 Cent & G-Unit who are really nice, Alicia Keys who is a very smart young woman and reads all the time. So many more, but all the stars are nice & mean, make me want to continue what I'm doing with more passion. Their ambition is incredible.

Ktown213: As you mentioned, you have some kimchee flavored Korean blood in you. How did being Korean-American affect your personality?
K-Sly: Being Korean-American...let's start with my temper! I don't know a Korean without one! It's the dominant trait. My upbringing was very disciplined, full of ass whoopings for half of which I have no idea the reasoning. My uncle is a dean of a music school in Taegu and former concert master of the KBS Symphony, grandpa taught violin for over 40 years, and then there's me...Piano & violin lessons to hip hop? It was a rebellious move. It's a lot of pressure pleasing a Korean family and scary to go against their wishes...and their tempers! But if you feel it so strongly and know it's right, you just have to prove to them it's okay to not take the "safe" way. Being Korean-American made me not stop what I'm doing because if I do, I'll get my ass whipped by my mom. And I'd have to hear my whole family tell me that I told you so!

Ktown213: Nicely said K-Sly. Where can we see or hear more of you in the near future? Any future projects?
K-Sly: If you don't know, I can be heard Monday through Friday from 7pm-10pm on 100.3 The Beat with a crazy Cuban guy named Eric Cubiche. I judged the Korean Talent Show (Kollaboration) in Pasadena a couple of months ago. I shot an MTV pilot for a game show as a DJ which will hopefully be picked up, and I just finished my 2nd mix cd "Sly as a Fox Pt. 2 All Star Edition," dj'ing for Magic Johnson, Lennox Lewis, Loon, Da Brat, and NBA players parties for all star week. I've called two Korean community service organizations and they haven't invited me to anything yet, so I'm still waiting. And I'm working on a high school tour where I can reach the teens and let them know how important and very special they are to this world.

Ktown213: Busy lady, besides spinning, what does K-Sly like to do on her spare time?
K-Sly: Spare time...What's that? Ha ha...sleep!

Ktown213: Now that you've been living in Los Angeles, What are your favorite places to visit in K-town?
K-Sly: I love the Red Dragon restaurant, Cho Sun Galbi, and Korean Galleria of course for my shiseido lotion and pastries!

Ktown213: Would you ever consider spinning at our future events? Oh please oh please?
K-Sly: Anytime! When do I start?

Ktown213: I'm going to hold you on that, ha ha. Well, thank you so much for the interview, and I hope you know all of K-Town loves you and supports you 100%!
K-Sly: I love K-Town and feel their support...stick together like rice. Thanks so much! I love the site! Peace!

K-Sly can be heard weekdays 7PM - 10PM on KKBT 100.3 The Beat

I have a few questions of my own.

*ahem*

How old are you? Do you date? Are you single? Do you have any inclinations about being a sugar momma? Do you like taking walks on beaches? How about sushi, how do you feel about that? You may email me at joe@jo3design.com. Thank you and have a nice day. Smile

Haaahaa! You're hilarious! First answer, a woman never tells her age. 2) I do date when I have time, but not often. 3) Yes I'm single. 4) LOL Suga Momma? No man is paying my bills so I'm not paying his. 5) I like taking walks...the beach is a little chilly though. Haven't found someone I want to take a beach walk with.
6) Sushi is good. I love it. Peace...K-Sly. :P :P :P

Oh, and re-reading your interview... My uncle was the conductor for the SBS orchestra & choir... He used to conduct for them for about 15 years... Perhaps your uncle knows my uncle? heh craziness.
