Interview
with DJ Shy
BY
JOHN
LEE
KTOWN213:
DJ Shy, give us like a non-traditional bad-ass intro,
ha ha.
DJ Shy: I'm the baddest female DJ ever! I have
the cleanest mix where even the other DJs think I'm
fakin' it with a CD! Those male haters! I spin hip hop,
reggae, old school, pop, and R&B!
Kt213: OK, that was quite an intro, haha. Give
us a little background of where you grew up and how you
were raised.
DJS: I grew up pretty much on the East Coast. I
was born outside of Philly in Westchester. Then my
family moved down south to Charlotte, North Carolina,
then to Edison, New Jersey. And finally, we ended up
outside of Pittsburgh. My ethnicity is Korean but
unfortunately my Korean is horrible! I grew up
white-washed and I think I was very sheltered. I came
out to LA to attend USC and that's all changed. Trojan
for life!
Kt213: That's good to hear. In terms of DJ's and
spinning, Who has been an inspiration to you so far?
DJS: Well honestly, I don't look up to
other DJs for inspiration. I get it from the songs I
spin and definitely from the crowd's response.
Kt213: What kind of music gets you going?
DJS: I love to spin hits that aren't
saturated on the radio. Dancehall reggae and old school
get me going!
Kt213: What's your most memorable DJ moment?
DJS: Hmmm...I would definitely have to say
spinning for my favorite hip hop artist Missy Elliot.
She had a wrap up party for the UPN network show. Her,
Tweet, Busta Rhymes, Teena Marie, and the cast and crew
were all there. I did not expect for Missy to bring her
video camera and film me spinning on the ones and twos!
That was very exciting!
Kt213: So how did the name DJ Shy come about?
DJS: My friends and coworkers there gave the me
that name because I was a good listener, and I knew
what to play to keep the crowd going and the comics
pumped. It's not because I was timid, haha.
Kt213: Kept the crowd going at Laugh Factory
right? Tell us a little bit about that and how you got
your start.
DJS: Well I started working at the Laugh Factory
as a hostess. When I worked on Sundays (Chocolate
Sundaes), there was a female DJ that did the intros and
outros of comedians. Her name was DJ EQ. She told me
how to get started and I soon began spinning at the
Laugh Factory on Mondays Latino Nights and Blazin
Tuesdays. Because I spun at Laugh Factory, I started
getting other gigs with other comedy spots in various
cafes and comedy Stores. From there, it grew to clubs
(Barfly), then
marketing campaigns (NIKE, PUMA), and now Television.
Kt213: Wow, much props to you on that.
What do you do in your spare time?
DJS: In my spare time, I listen and spin Music,
watch Tivo, play video games, spend time with my
puppies, and my boyfriend. Oh and I love to go out to
eat.
Kt213: So where can we see you perform?
DJS: 17 episodes of "The Corner with Jason
Moore" on Channel 34 on Time Warner!
Kt213: Thank you for your time Shy, any last
words before we conclude the interview?
DJS: I'm not shy, I'm just a good listener!
Thank you K-Town!
