Interview
with DB Tonik
BY JOHN
LEE
Ktown213:
DB Tonik, give us your 30-second intro....
DB Tonik: Yea yea, DB TONIK in the building keeping all things
fresh! And your kings of Fresh, "Johnathon D" and "Wonju". Indie
Visual Entertainment...IV Entertainment making fire! I know you wanna
ask us so before you ask..."DB TONIK" stands for "Donnybrook Tonik".
Donnybrook means to cause an uproar, an uprising, a free-for-all, a brawl.
Tonik is anything invigorating physically, mentally, or morally. And in
Music; the first degree of the scale; the keynote. So in other
words...the beginning of a something new that'll rock the world. There was
no way of saying that without sounding full of ourselves right?
Kt213: So how did it all start for you guys? How'd you guys
meet? Give us a lil' history....
DBT: When we were kids I was sitting at a bus stop waiting for
the bus when I heard Wonju walking by beat boxin'. I started singing to his
beat box and here we are 10 years later.
Kt213: How would you describe your music?
DBT: It's a mixture of genres. We make music that makes you
feel good. We like to refer to it as fresh pop. All rights reserved by the
way!
Kt213:
Any upcoming projects? Where can we see more of DB Tonik?
DBT: DB Tonik is in the process of recording our first mixtape
as well as our new single. We have a few shows this month. Friday the 19th,
were performing at level 3 with Smash productions at their White Party; the
27th well be rocking the stage at GO Productions SCREAM 4 event @ the
Factory; and the 31st we'll be performing at Visionshock's Halloween event
at Vanguard. Anyone who wants to join us can go on our Myspace page for more
info. (www.myspace.com/dbtonik
and www.dbtonik.com)
Kt213: What has been the biggest hurdle to your success?
DBT: Being Asian. No problem though. We're proud and thankful.
We're too talented to be dwelling on petty shit like the color and origin of
ones skin.
Kt213: What has been DB Tonik's most memorable moment?
DBT: The first time I got on stage in front of my family and
friends at a paid gig is a moment that we'll never forget.
Kt213: Are Asian artists finally starting to breakthrough
mainstream hip hop? Are we still far off?
DBT: We're definitely breaking through! which one of us haven't
heard some music from an Asian hip hop artist that we've bounced our heads
to. We've been creating a buzz for the longest time. It's time
to reap what we've sewn.
Kt213: On your off time, what do you guys do? Any hobbies?
DBT: Sports! You gotta love it. Nothin' better than
exhausting yourself to the point you feel sick.
Kt213: Any last minute shout-outs?
DBT: We wanna give a shout out to KALI KALIENTE, IZ, DNA,
Know1edge, Debt Stock, Cockstar, FRA, VIsion Shock Ent., Go Productions,
Smash Pro, Blended and definitely big ups to KTOWN213 for holdin' it down.
Kt213: Thank you for the interview, we wish you guys the best
of luck!
