Perils of a Catholic Upbringing

As I walked down the busy sidewalk, knowing I was late for Mass, my eye fell upon one of those unfortunate, homeless vagabonds that are found in every city these days.

Some people turned to stare. Others quickly looked away as if the sight would somehow contaminate them.

Recalling my old pastor, Father Mike, who always admonished me to 'care for the sick, feed the hungry and clothe the naked,' I was moved by some powerful inner urge to reach out to this unfortunate person.

Wearing what can only be described as rags, carrying every worldly possession in two plastic bags, my heart was touched by this person's condition.

Yes, where some people saw only rags, I saw a true, hidden beauty.

A small voice inside my head called out, 'Reach out, reach out and touch this person!'

So I did...

I won't be at Mass this week.

Hope you have a great holiday weekend! Courtesy of Myna T.

Jose Canseco on Fox's Moment of Truth

America's favorite tattle tail will be on the Moment of Truth this season. Some of the questions that were asked...

Did you ever cheat on your wife?
Did you ever inject Mark Maguire with steroids?

SPOILER
Canseco reaches the 35k question and loses everything on, "Are you a cheater?" He answered "No" when the real answer was "Yes". He's threatening to sue FOX saying they tricked him.

Number One Club in Ktown

We recently ran a poll to see what people thought the number one K-town club of all time was. I honestly thought Velfarre, my personal favorite, would at least put up a fight for top honors with Le Cercle but it really wasn’t even close. I think our visitors are simply too young to remember how great Vels was.

Part of the appeal of Vels was that it was the most poppin’ K-town club during the peak of K-pop and Trance in LA. I’m talking about when DJ DOC, HOT, DIVA, COOL, UP, CLON and SES all made the charts on a consistent basis. When the intro to Better Off Alone would make people fight for the 4 corner speakers and the 3 rows of steps against the back wall under the brightly lit V-E-L-F-A-R-R-E sign. It wasn’t as big and the décor wasn’t as nice as Le Cercle, but you'd still put up with Tiny’s dirty stares and condescending remarks at the door because that was the place to be on the weekends.

Part of me always hoped that they would resolve their 10 year battle to obtain proper licenses and reopen its doors to old fogies that want to relive their glory days. I recently took a walk down memory lane and drove by it only to see a foofoo French Restaurant. I hope they realize that the only escargot we eat in K-town is Gorbangyi and bring my club back.

2008-2009 Fall/Winter Softball - Official League Schedule

After a disappointing finish last season and missing the playoffs for the first time in 4 years, Ktown213 is looking for redemption. This season we picked up new kid from the minors, AKA MrCLoWnY. So this rookie better shape up and show us what he's got! Otherwise we'll embarass him on this blog week-in and week-out hahaha.

That makes the roster 12..the original 11 + 1.

+

This season's league includes some familiar teams, but a couple of teams Ktown213 has never faced before:

Ktown213 (yours truly)
Axewounds - we ownz them
Nice Cobras - they wont be nice when we get done with them ahem!!
Wilshire Pride - What part of Wilshire? Ktown-Wilshire? This town ain't big enough for two ktown teams!!! lol
Little Bar Lounge Rats - i hate rats...they freak me out.

I'm also gonna make a new CD with new entrance songs for all our players...of course i'll include the ultimate rally song - eye of the tiger in case we need it hehe. Last year I made Edwin's entrance song Oops I did it again by Britney Spears hahahahaah.

Should be an interesting season folks!

Season starts 9/4/08 so mark your calendars and get your season tickets available at ticketmaster.com! LOL

S. Korea in the Olympics - Baseball & Swimming

I'm feeling a bit patriotic today...so let's break down some of the great Korean teams/atheletes in the 2008 Olympics, reppin' the good old red, white, and blue.....aaaaand black ( you know, cuz of them lines in the corner???) ahahaha.

S. Korean Baseball Team - Are you kidding me??? Still undefeated? A team that didn't even qualify for Athens in 2004? Korea beat Japan last night coming back in the later innings, winning the game 6 -2.

You know that what that means? Guaranteed medal baby, gold or silver! Recipe for success in that game? Good clutch hitting, good base running, aaaaaaaaaand slugger Seung-Yuop Lee (이승엽) baby! He's known as the "Lion King" by his fans...he's Asia's most feared hitters...he holds the record for most homer runs (56) in a single season in Korea. Did you know in 2006 at the inaugural World Baseball Classic (WBC) he led the tournament with 5 homers and driving 10 runs?

Anyways, after the game he apologized to Japan, "I just want to say I'm sorry to the fans and players of Japan, but it is an important game and we're all the same Asians." Wow what great display of sportmanship right??? Weeeeeeeeeell, there's a twist...he currently plays for Japan, earing about $2 milion a year, LOL I guess he can definitely expect something less than a hero's welcome when he goes back. He's quite a talent though...I hear the Dodgers and the Yankees are after him...but he says he's pretty content with where he's at now, so we'll see.....

Park Tae-Hwan (박태환)- The story with this kid is that he was suffered from asthma as a child, and started swimming at the age of five because his doctor believed it could improve his condition. Is that inspirational or what folks!!!???

He also won gold* in Athens 2004 when Park was only 15 years old, winning the 400m race.

Watch the youtube video below when he won again in Australia - 400m. Siiiick....just siiiiick.

*Anyways, regarding the gold he won in Athens back in 2004....guess what? Afterwards he got DISQUALIFIED for a false start in one of the prelims, and his medal was stripped away from him. Being only 15 he cried and cried and cried...it was so sad. =(

But 2008 Beijing, he's baaaaaaaaaaaaaack winning the gold in the 400m, and coming 2nd behind Michael Phelps in the 200m. Check out his gold medal performance in the 400m race! Can you believe he's only 18???

GO Park Tae-Hwan!!

What I Saw #1

anyone who knows me can agree that i always have a camera on me. whether it is my point-n-shoot or my dslr (i don't believe in camera phones), i am a closet paparazzi that's ready to strike anywhere, anytime. although by no means is my life adventurous or exciting, i do come across some interesting sights. here is my first entry on "what i saw."

a few weeks back i was asked if i wanted to go check out the local flea market that is held every sunday. thinking that i might come across a good deal and that it may be a great opp to get some shots, i packed up my gear and drove to laney college in oakland.

once i arrived, i was kinda surprised to see the level of "jenkieness" this event had to offer. This is what i saw:

_MG_8008
lovely clothing display system

_MG_8009
need a replacement remote? have an hour to look for it?

_MG_8010
need a new er... used belt? have a few hours to kill?

_MG_8011
while i was walking around, i saw these youngsters on their fixed gears. track bikes have been the rage the last few years. how come it was never popular when i use to race track?

_MG_8013
a collection of power tools stolen over many years...

_MG_8014
this little bugger might have been the only thing worth buying there.

_MG_8016
fresh fruit (yes a tomato is a fruit), but now i have to remember which produce is under a salmonella scare.

_MG_8018
i guess it is an oakland thing, but i doubt i will ever see mannequins with this much "junk in the trunk" in ktown.

until next time...

Fashion Show + Rino + Yuri Tag + Taeko + Bboy

So I've been working on a small magazine for my company and our client. We did a photo shoot with Harajuku girl Rino Nakasone and our project editor, Echo of Partytilam, managed to get Yuri Tag of Kaba Modern to interview her. Since we both really don't know much about dancing, it was a good idea to let the two dancers talk....dance. In return for her help, we made an ad for Yuri and Taeko (Fish N Chicks) in the magazine for their new entertainment project. The magazine will be distributed in Hawaii, SF, and other West Coast locations....and the first event the magazine will be given out at is at Area in Hollywood on August 30th. So come out and check it out and you might win a free Palm Centro.

and just in case you missed it....IBE 2008, where the BBOy powerheads of the West faced off against the powerheads of the East. Ronnie, Born, Kaku, Hong 10, Baek, Cico, KYS, and more...

This is also the event where Hong 10 broke his arm....

Deadly Fire in Koreatown

Deadly Fire in Koreatown

The folks from Foreign Family were blogging about how Western Ave was totally closed off this past Saturday afternoon (their blog post)...

Welp, apparently there was a deadly fire that took lives of one firefighter and two other victims...that does explain it though....you just dont see Western empty....ever! I haaaaate driving on that street...almost as bad as Vermont...u feel me??

(video) - http://cbs2.com/video/?id=74607@kcbs.dayport.com (lovely Sharon Tay)

source: http://lafd.blogspot.com/2008/08/two-dead-firefighter-injured-in-la.html

On Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 2:38 AM, 14 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, 7 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, 5 Arson Units, 2 Urban Search and Rescue Units, 1 Rehab Unit, 1 Hazardous Materials Team, 3 EMS Battalion Captains, 5 Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams and 1 Division Chief Officer Command Team, a total of 118 Los Angeles Fire Department personnel under the direction of Assistant Chief Richard Warford, responded to a Greater Alarm Civilian Fatality Structure Fire at 422 South Western Avenue in the Koreatown/Wilshire Center area of Los Angeles.

Firefighters arrived quickly to discover heavy fire in the first and second floors of a two story commercial structure, with flames spreading to the attic.

Forcing entry into the multiple businesses of the well secured building, firefighters commenced a fierce and well-coordinated attack on the blaze, while their colleagues commenced a systematic search of the non-residential premises.

As the flames were extinguished in a first-floor skin care business that had been fully involved with fire, firefighters discovered the charred remains of two persons.

During the ongoing firefight, one Los Angeles Firefighter sustained 1st and 2nd degree burns to his hands. In fair condition, he was transported to the Emergency Room at Sherman Oaks Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The fire was extinguished in just 38 minutes, and skilfully confined to just two businesses on the first floor, one-and-a-half firms on the second floor, and a portion of the attic.

No other injuries were reported.

Monetary loss from the fire is still being tabulated.

A positive identification of the deceased - to include their age and gender, as well as the exact cause, time and manner of their deaths will be determined by the Coroner's Office.

The cause of this early morning blaze remains under active investigation by Police and Fire Department officials.

Olympics: Spain Basketball Team being stupid…

Spain's Basketball Federation has published a good luck advert for their men's team, the world champions, in which they stand pulling at the sides of their eyes in a slit-eyed gesture.

There is no obvious intention to upset their Olympic hosts in Beijing, but the irresponsible picture is likely to cause controversy and could be interpreted so as to lead to accusations of racism.

Spanish sport has been mired in rows over racism in the last few years. In November 2004 black English footballers were subjected to relentless racial barracking from home supporters in a match in Spain. Before the World Cup there were calls for Luis Aragones, then Spain's football coach, to be sacked after he called Thierry Henry a "black shit". And last year Lewis Hamilton suffered racist abuse during testing for the Spanish grand prix near Barcelona.

Spain play their first match in the Olympic basketball competition against Greece at 7.30am BST today. (The Guardian)

Is the typical Spaniard really that stupid beyond all rational thought? These douchebags better get boo'd while they take the court in China and as team USA beats the crap out of them. I'm a Laker's fan and even Pau Gasol is in the mix...which is very disappointing to me.

Pau Gasol is not only a douchebag....he's a typical stupid jock. You'd think living in America and Los Angeles he'd be better educated on the fact that white people aren't funny when they try to take a stab at racial humor, especially when it comes to Asians. But hey, at least he's doing it for his country...and they think it's funny.

And the slanted eye posture is offensive because it was always used to mock Asians by white people. Team Spain might as well be called Team Rosie O'Donnell.

"Beggin" - Madcon + ABDC2

A cool BBoy track from 2007. And if it sounds familiar...it's the track Super Crew danced to on the first ABCD2 try out episode.

ABDC2….Fanny Pack should not have been sent home. While I’m glad that Super Crew outlasted them, I would have preferred they lose to them in the final. So Real Cru is a nice young dance group but their “bboy brothers” doesn’t hold a candle to Super Crew. They also aren’t as creative as Fanny Pack and their body control isn’t even as tight as Kaba Modern’s. They are just “okay” both in being entertaining and in comparison to their competitors. Fanny Pack may not be crazy ass dancers but they certainly hit their beats harder….especially in that 2nd to last episode. If I was a judge, I would’ve voted for them over Super Crew just on that performance alone….and because of that little Asian girl crawling on the table.
